This week’s product review is over a non-dairy creamer I’ve been enjoying lately! I recently decided to go dairy-free. And well…I didn’t, y’all. I significantly reduced the amount of dairy that I consumed, and I noticed a difference right away! So I’m going to stick with a reduced-dairy eating pattern. But there are just some things I’m not willing to let go of! And that’s alright because learning to eat well is a slow and personal journey. You have to embrace the process!
This creamer was one of the many dairy-alternatives that I tried that I am going to keep buying on the regular. I was really impressed with the product overall and think it’s one of the better non-dairy creamers that has come out since they became popular a few years back.
How Much Do Nutpods Cost?
Nutpods aren’t cheap, but as far as non-dairy creamers go they are actually affordable. Whether or not this product is worth the cost to you will likely depend on how serious you are about ditching/limiting dairy.
Those who are lactose intolerant will probably find the price more acceptable than someone who is trying the product out of curiosity. Regardless, here are a couple of price comparisons for you so you can draw your own conclusions:
A 16-fl oz carton costs $3.79 at Target.
A 11.2-oz carton costs $4.99 at Walmart. This price may be different in-store depending on your area, but this was the price online.
You can also buy them directly from Nutpod’s website in a 4-pack of 11.2-oz cartons for $14.95. That makes each carton $3.74.
Note: The 11.2-oz cartons lasted me about 4 cups of coffee each, but I am pretty generous with creamer. I’m a creamer-with-some-coffee kind of gal, so if you only use 1-2 tbsp (versus my 1/4 cup…heh) then it should last you longer!
How Do Nutpods Taste?
These taste great! They are mostly made from a combination of almonds and coconut cream. This combo of creamy fats makes for a texture that is very smooth and has a silky mouthfeel.
It does not taste like half and half, so if that’s what you’re switching from like I was, you’ve been warned. But it is similar to half and half in that it makes your coffee smoother and adds some sweetness.
Overall I love the flavor! Almond creamer on its own is too watery for me, and coconut creamer on its own was too stark of a flavor on top of my coffee. The combination of them in this creamer is a great balance and really is the best of both worlds to me!
Nutrition Breakdown
I was surprised at the nutrition label on this product. In a 1 tbsp serving, there is 1 total gram of fat. That’s quite literally the only remarkable thing on the label! Everything else has a “0” by it. I want to be clear that this doesn’t automatically make something healthy, but it is in stark contrast to many “healthified” coffee creamers out there today.
Many coffee creamers, from sugar-free to non-dairy to specialty varieties have lots of sugar, sugar alcohols, and are high in fat. In moderation these are fine, but if you’re anything like me and use heaps of creamer in your coffee, those added sugars and things can add up–especially over months to years of daily consumption.
I think my favorite thing about Nutpods’ Original creamer is that is is not sweetened. Having my morning coffee with some of the bitter edge taken off, minus the increase in added sugars, is a plus. Before switching to Nutpods, I am certain that much of my added sugar intake came from sweetened beverages like coffee with creamer.
And I’m not alone. A study done by the University of Illinois found that many Americans consume excess amounts of added sugars and fat through their morning cup of joe! And it’s not just the frappuccino or latte at Starbucks, either. It is often through a sweetened creamer. More on that in this short article about the Illinois study. It’s a very quick read and not in science-y jargon, so check it out if you have a sec!
Point is, this product is a great plant-based healthier creamer option because it is very low in added sugars (the original flavor has no added sugars), low in fats, and has a similar mouthfeel to half and half!
The Pros
-convenient packaging sizes (comes in 11.2-oz and 16-oz, which makes them great for taking to work or using in one-off recipes so you don’t have a half-used carton of plant-based milk or creamer going bad in the fridge!)
-low in added sugars
-low in unhealthy fats
-similar in texture to half and half, especially compared to other plant-based creamers
-packaging is recyclable
The Cons
–expensive compared to typical coffee creamers
-made from a combination of almonds and coconut cream, so it does not taste similar to dairy (could be a pro or a con!)
That’s all I’ve got for you this week! What questions do you have about this product? What product should I review next? Let me know in the comments below!
I think it’s great! I am trying to try limit my dairy as much as possible on my journey to a completely pant based diet and just plain plant milk alone isn’t smooth enough. This has fewer additives and sweeteners (I don’t like sweet coffee) than other plant based creamers and tastes good as well. I am very happy to have discovered it! I just wish I could get single serve shelf stabile pods for travel!
How is it possible that Nutpods has zero saturated fats? Doesn’t coconut cream have saturated fats? Nut pods is really very tasty and creamy and froths well. Just a concern regarding saturated fats .
I wanted to love Nutpods. People keep reviewing them as if they are great. I tried it. Never was anything more watery and thin than Nutpods. There was zero taste and for the price it is ridiculous. You may as well just add some almond milk and water and you have the same effect.
What it does not do is provide any sense of having added anything to your coffee.
I love my coffee. It must be only with half and half!. Recently half and half was replaced for heavy cream!
I have tried t some creamers that don’t have so many calories. That’s the only thing I care about. I don’t mind dairy. I don’t use sugar. I have no desire to be dairy free.
Recently, while in Target I bought a container of nut pod. I have to say it has more than possibilities for a “change” it is closest to half and half. The 10 calories per TB is a change which I love.
I rather have less fattening foods than give up my real cream, so it’s not about too many calories, but I would rather have less calories. I am still experimenting but I am giving your product a? For the very first time.
The no sugar is another plus. It’s the same calories as whole milk. Thank you for listening
