Product Review: Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt

by Shavonne Morrison MS, RD, LD

Reducing your added sugar intake may seem like just another fad to some, but it’s a habit many Americans would benefit from adopting. According to the USDA, the average American older than 2 years consumes 17 teaspoons of sugar each day. That’s well above the recommended daily amount for women, which is 9 teaspoons. Excessive sugar intake has been linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, so it’s no wonder people are trying their best to find balance while enjoying the foods they love.

Many companies have responded to the public’s interest in reducing their sugar intake by creating “no sugar added” and “less sugar” versions of their products. In today’s review, we’ll discuss one of my favorite low-sugar breakfast options: Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt.

How Much Does It Cost?

As far as greek yogurt goes, these individual cups aren’t too bad! The average cost of most yogurt cups is about $2 each. You can usually save money by getting a variety package, which may run you between $8-$12, depending on the brand. For a variety pack of this yogurt at Costco it cost $12.99! I love that price…gosh, I love Costco.

How Does It Taste?

I was expecting this yogurt to taste bland and boring because of the low sugar content. I am so glad I was WRONG. This yogurt is the perfect balance of sweet, creamy, and fruity (ya know, depending on the flavor you get).

I grew up eating Yoplait yogurt cups, so that’s what I was used to. Not doggin’ on Yoplait, but they are higher in sugar, and they taste like it (aka, they’re delicious).

Overall, this gets a 10/10 for flavor! I have tried many, many yogurts, almost all of which claimed to be the creamiest, most velvety-soft-in-your-mouth yogurt. This one is among the creamiest I have had! And as you’ll see in the next section, you’d be hard-pressed to find a yogurt that tastes as good and has a great nutrition profile.

Nutrition Breakdown

Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt states on its label that it has “45% less sugar than other yogurts.”

I think this is a fantastic thing! Mornings are often a time of hurry and stress for many women, trying to get yourself and your family ready for the day while still recovering from the busy day before.

Because of this, easy, healthy, low-stress breakfast options are a game-changer! We know breakfast is important, and we’ve all had to power through an audibly-growling stomach that we try to ignore (and hope no one else can hear) so we can get to work until the sweet relief of lunchtime arrives.

Not to sound like a TV commercial, but making this part of a balanced breakfast could be the key to beating the morning brain-fog by powering our brains with the protein, fats, and carbohydrates we need.

Basically I’m saying a great breakfast can take you from surviving to thriving, okay? And we’re trying to thrive here because we’re busy women with lots of important stuff to do šŸ˜‰

All that said, this 5.3-oz yogurt has only 9g of sugar (5g added sugar) and 12g protein. Yoplait’s 5.9-oz strawberry yogurt cups have 19g sugar (13g added) and 6g protein. Dannon’s 5.3-oz strawberry fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt has 22g sugar and 5g protein. So I’d venture to say that Chobani has done a great job here balancing cost, flavor, and nutrition into a convenient breakfast or snack!

There is one caveat I should mention, though. By itself, this isn’t enough food for a balanced meal. However, by adding toppings with healthy fats, fiber, and protein, and pairing the yogurt with other healthy options you could certainly make a great meal and save time doing it!

Here’s a few ideas of what you could do to make this part of a healthy meal:

-pair it with breakfast cereal and a banana or apple to add fiber, vitamins and minerals

-add chia or ground flaxseed to add protein, fiber, and healthy fats

-eat it with a green smoothie to add fiber, antioxidants, and healthy fats

-eat it with some whole wheat avocado toast to add fiber, whole grains, and healthy fats

-eat it with oatmeal topped with berries and nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews) for fiber, whole grains, and healthy fats

What’s Good About Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt

-High in protein

-Low in added sugar and sugar

-Easy to take in a lunch bag or as part of a last-minute on-the-go breakfast

-Easy to customize and boost nutrition profile by adding toppings or pairing it with other nutrient-dense foods

What’s Not So Good About Chobani Less Sugar Greek Yogurt

-Lack of flavor variety compared to similar yogurt products

-If you are afraid of eating sugar and opt for this but end up not liking it, don’t feel like you have to eat it because it is low in sugar compared to other yogurts. You can ENJOY your food and also have it be nourishing to your body! My encouragement to you would be to keep searching for foods you get excited about eating and don’t settle for what you think healthy food is. It’s different for everyone, and you CAN find nutritious food that you look forward to eating!

That’s it for this product review! Have any thoughts you’d like to share? Have you tried this yogurt before? What product should I review next? Let me know in the comments below!

Chobani zero Sugar is disgusting. If you are on a Keto//low sugar diet please avoid this brand. It is horrible. When you peal off the seal, you have to be careful that all the water does not spill out in order to mix it to a state that it is somewhat edible. I am serious; this is disgusting stuff. To taste it is disgusting… Don’t buy their zero sugar brand.

I love this yogurt!! I eat it for breakfast with natures path granola with pumpkin and flaxseed and it really fuels my morning, specially when I have to wait six hours to eat lunch. Also I love to eat it for dinner instead of making a heavy meal this is perfect! It really fills me and it’s satisfies my sweet tooth craving Without the guilt!

I was very disappointed in this yogurt. I tried the blueberry and it didn’t really taste much like blueberry, wasn’t as sweet as the regular yogurt and quite a nasty aftertaste. I think I’ll stick with the real low sugar yogurt
